HughesNet High-speed Satellite Internet System Tips

Many rural residents in our service areas of El Dorado County and Northern California are getting connected to the Internet with a HughesNet Satellite Internet system. When properly installed, HughesNet systems can provide satisfactory performance, equivalent to a DSL or high-speed broadband cable connection. However, many users complain of poor or intermittant performance with their HughesNet system. Here are a few tips and suggestions to try if you're not getting the most out of your HughesNet or DirecWay Satellite Internet System. Please note that some of these tips apply only to the HughesNet DW6000, DW7000 and HN7000S modems. The newer HughesNet HN9000 satellite Internet systems have a slightly different operating systems and may require additional measures to correct service problems. However, many of these tips are shared in common between the two systems:

1. First and foremost, HughesNet does not guarantee its service levels. They advertise only that their service levels can provide "up to" the maximum listed speeds. Most likely, your actual speeds will be 50% to 80% of the maximums shown, and can be lower at times depending upon how many other HughesNet customers are online.

2. The standard 0.74 meter (30") DirectWay or HughesNet dish systems owned by many users throughout Northern California, El Dorado County, Latin America and the Caribbean supports the the first three HughesNet service levels. These levels are generally OK for use by one or two users, but can be slow if you are sharing your system with more than that. It just depends on how and when everyone is using the shared system. You might think of sharing your HughesNet system's capacity like sharing a water supply pipe with your neighbors. If you have a small water pipe serving your neighborhood and no one uses a lot of water at the same time, then everything is fine. But if one or more of your neighbors are "power users" and wash their clothes a lot or leave the hose running all day, then that will affect everyone else's water supply. If they only water at night, you may not notice if you only use the water during the day.

3. In the same way you might be sharing a single HughesNet system with your neighbors, your Hughesnet system is sharing space on the satellite with other HughesNet system owners. When there are a lot of HughesNet users on the same satellite at the same time, usually in the afternoons, then the speed for all of the users on that satellite may slow down.

4. HughesNet has about a dozen satellites than can be seen from the US, and most subscribers are spread out among these satellites. To receive HughesNet service in southern Baja, most of El Dorado County, and Central America however, these smaller 0.74 meter HughesNet satellite antennas are limited to using just a few satellites; usually SatMex 5 or 6. The traffic on these two satellites can be very congested at times because they're the only two satellites being used for just about every HughesNet system throughout much of El Dorado County, parts of the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

5. Each HughesNet satellite has a number of frequencies, or "channels," and users are assigned to a specific channel when their system is provisioned by HughesNet. These channels are shared with other users, and some of these channels are more congested than others. Also, as the satellites age, some of these channels may deliver degraded performance compared to others.

6. Certain uses and applications such as audio or video streaming, downloading large files, or receiving updates through the Internet can seriously slow down a HughesNet system. Modern operating systems and many applications are often running in the background and continuously downloading patches and updates. Other users may be receiving these updates at the same time as you, and all this activity can slow down the entire system.

7. HughesNet maintains a "Fair Access Policy" (also known as a FAP). This policy allows each user to download a certain amount of megabytes within a given period of time (For the Access 100 Plan, it's 375 MB total within 24 hours). Once your downloads exceed your FAP threshold, your bandwidth will be throttled back to something around 56 Kbs, about the speed of a regular telephone dial up modem. You can read more about HughesNet's FAP policy here: http://customercare.myhughesnet.com/fap_faqs.htm

Again, using our water analogy, it might help you to think of your available FAP megabytes like the reserve of water in a water storage tank (called a "tinaco" in El Dorado County). The storage tank may hold 375 gallons when full. But when you empty the tank, the available water coming out of the tank will be limited to no more than the dribble of water going in. Over time, your tank refills and you have more water. In the same way, your FAP allowance recovers over time until you are once again able to use full speed.

OK, so what can you do about any of this?

a - Monthly High-speed Data Allowance and Usage: Like cell phone data plans, all satellite Internet systems provide a data allowance. The Gen5 system provides a monthly data allowance from 8AM to 2AM to handle regular daily usage, and a extra allowance from 2AM to 8AM to handle computer and application software updates and manually-scheduled downloads. For more information, please read the Gen5 Fair Access Policy. Please note that all users on a system will share this data allowance, and certain applications and streaming video devices such as (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Firestick, Roku, AppleTV, GoogleTV, Dish Network or DirecTV VOD/Video on-Demand, etc.), streaming audio services (Online Radio, Pandora, Spotify, podcasts, etc.), and peer-to-peer file sharing programs can consume large amounts of data in a short period of time. Streaming video in high definition can use 1 to 2 GB per hour.

If you exceed your monthly plan data, you will experience reduced data speeds, which are typically in the range of 1–3 Mbps, until the start of your next billing period. There are no mandatory overage charges. Your data allowance will be refilled and full service restored at the end of your service month, or you can purchase additional blocks of Data to immediately restore full service whenever needed; $9 for 3GB, $15 for 5GB, $30 for 10GB, and $75 for 25GB. To get maximum use of your data allowance, Gen5 also provides a Free HughesNet Status Meter, enabling you to instantly monitor how much data allowance you have left. You can also purchase and apply "Data Restore Tokens through the Status Meter to instantly restore high-speed service.

b Gen5 Service Coverage, Speeds and Availability: Gen5 Satellite reception requires a clear, unobstructed view at about a 38° elevation towards the southern sky, and usage is subject to the Gen5 Fair Access Policy. When you connect to the Internet using the Gen5 service, the upload and download speeds you experience will vary based on a variety of factors including the configuration of your computer; the number of concurrent users; network or Internet congestion; the speed of the Web sites you are accessing; and other factors.
Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of service are not guaranteed. All satellite communications performance may become impaired or unavailable due to inclement weather, snow buildup on the dish, atmospheric conditions and sun interference. Because of the increased number of Users during peak hours, actual upload and download speeds will likely be lower. For more information, please see the Gen5 Fair Access Policy.
c $0 Lease Setup Fee - Not applicable with the Purchase option. The Gen5 Lease offer requires credit approval. Monthly equipment lease fee of $9.99 per month will be added to monthly service. PLEASE NOTE: If you later decide you would rather purchase your equipment instead of leasing it, you can contact HughesNet within 90 days after your service activation and request to purchase your equipment. The amount charged will be the full equipment purchase price less any amounts already paid in monthly lease fees. The amount of the purchase will be charged along with your next month's bill. Please also note the same 24-month service agreement applies whether you lease or purchase.

d SAVE $10/mo. for 24 Months - New residential subscribers only. Save $10/month on the 20 GB plan. After 24 months, all plans revert to the standard monthly fee. Cannot be combined with any other service plan offer. $9.99 monthly equipment lease fee may also apply.

e DIRECTV Discount - $10/mo. discount on Gen5 service for 12 months available to new or existing DIRECTV subscribers. You must maintain DIRECTV service or you will lose the discount. DIRECTV service must be at the same physical address as the HughesNet service.

h Service Commitment, Cancellation, and Early Termination Fees - All Gen5 Service Plans require a 24-month service commitment. Fees for early termination on either the lease- or purchase-option apply: If you cancel before installation, the amount collected at time of order will be refunded and the order cancelled. If you cancel after installation but before the end of your 24–month term commitment, you will be charged a Service Termination Fee of up to $400. The exact amount of the Service Termination Fee will be $400 for the first ninety (90) days after activation of the HughesNet Service. Thereafter, the amount will decrease by $15 per month for each month of completed active Service. Further, If you selected the lease option, you must return the HughesNet modem, power supply, and the outdoor radio within 45 days of cancellation date or be charged an additional $300 Unreturned Equipment Fee.

PLEASE NOTE: You are free to change service plans at anytime, with the selection and pricing limited to the then, currently-available plans.

In the event that you terminate your new Service before one year, El Dorado Networks may incur a chargeback fee of up to $200 from the Service Provider (Dish Network, DIRECTV or HughesNet) for the Free Standard Installation work we provided you. If so, El Dorado Networks will charge you for reimbursement of any chargeback fees we incur. This reimbursement to El Dorado Networks is in addition to any early-termination fees you may be charged by the Service Provider for cancelling your service before the contract expiration.

To cancel your HughesNet service, you would contact HughesNet directly. HughesNet will send you a postage-paid shipping box to return leased equipment. The antenna itself does not need to be removed or returned. You will be responsible for all costs associated with removing the equipment. You will not be reimbursed for your monthly service or lease fees, nor for any upfront fees for lease setup, non-standard installation charges, or for equipment purchased. This cancellation policy is offered by HughesNet only, and subject to change at any time.

Vacation Holds: - If you're going to be away for extended periods, HughesNet allows allows you to temporarily suspend your Internet service. A "Vacation Hold" will allow you to suspend service for up to six months per year, in two-month increments. If the vacation hold is within the two-year contract period, the contract termination date will be extended by the same number of months that the service is placed on hold. You can call HughesNet at any time to start or stop your vacation hold.

Initial Billing and AutoPay - HughesNet requires a valid credit or debit card be placed on file at the time of order. The credit or debit card you provide will be charged on the day your order is placed for your selected Service Plan, equipment & installation fees if any, as well as any additional options that you choose, minus any promotional offers or discounts. State and local taxes are not included in these fees but will be charged on the day of install. You will be automatically enrolled for Auto Bill Pay using the same credit/debit card used for placing your order, and HughesNet will then charge your subsequent months of service each month at approximately 30 days after your installation date. After your service is activated, you may then opt for EFT funds transfer from your checking account, or you can request paper billing with a mailed statement for an additional $5/mo. If your order is cancelled before installation, please allow up to 10 business days from the date your order is cancelled to receive a refund to your credit card for any upfront charges.

i Specialized Applications - Some specialized applications may work over HughesNet Gen5 but results are not guaranteed, nor will HughesNet provide Technical Support for their installation or troubleshooting. These applications include:
Online Gaming: Many types of strategy and turn-based online games may work with Gen5 service but the majority of real-time, multiplayer (high-twitch / rapid-response/ first-person shooter) games that people play on Wii, Xbox Live and PlayStation will not work over any satellite Internet service due to the higher latency (delay). Overall performance of any network-connected game system or device is not guaranteed.
Virtual Private Networking (VPN): Remote server applications such as business VPN connections over Gen5 may work but are not guaranteed, and speeds may be reduced by as much as 90% or more when using these applications. We recommend you visit our office in Diamond Springs first and test your laptop or PC on our HughesNet system here to verify compatibility.
Camera/Surveillance/Home-automation Systems: Due to the use of advanced IPV6 Internet Protocols by the Gen5 system, many types of conventional, Internet-based camera, surveillance systems and home automation systems may not work, or may not be accessible from remote viewing locations. We recommend the use of IPV6-enabled equipment and/or cloud-based systems using an intermediary server, although performance and results are not guaranteed.
Cell-phone WiFi Calling This is a feature of some cell phones, allowing you to make cell phone calls over your Wireless Internet connection without a cell phone signal. There are also devices known as "Femtocells." A femtocell is a small, low-power cellular base station, designed for use in a home or small business. It connects to the service provider’s network via broadband Internet to provide local cellular phone connections near the device. These services or devices may work but they are not guaranteed or supported by HughesNet.
Voice Over IP Internet (VoIP): Third-party Voice Over Internet telephone services, such as SKYPE, GoogleVoice, MagicJack, OOMA and Vonage may work but are not guaranteed, and HughesNet cannot provide Technical Support for these services. Only the Gen5 "Voice" VoIP Service is optimized to work over Gen5.
Feel free to visit our office to test your applications and equipment on our system first.
m Video-data Saver Feature: Streaming is optimized with video streams at DVD quality (up to 480p). For best performance, leave any video streaming applications at their default automatic resolution setting. Most video services are supported. Not all video sources are identifiable. 3 times data savings is based on average HD bit rate of 3.6 Mbps vs. DVD quality at 1.1 Mbps.
j Free Standard Installation: - A standard installation includes mounting one exterior antenna on a wooden composition wall or composite-shake roof of a single, standard 1- or 2-story private residence within 50' of the location of the indoor equipment within the same building.
