Rubicon Trail Foundation Taps El Dorado Networks For Internet and Cell Phone Service At The 2014 Cantina For The 'Con Fund Raiser

For Immediate Release

Placerville, CA (August 31, 2014) – At the recent 10th Annual Cantina For The 'Con, held August 30th and 31st at Loon Lake, El Dorado Networks of Placerville, California, was designated by The Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) as the Official Internet Service Provider for this annual two-day Fund Raiser. In addition to setting up a HughesNet Gen4 high-speed Internet system and wireless network for use by RTF staff and attendees, El Dorado Networks was also able to install a remote cell-phone link. For the first time ever in the ten-year history of Cantina For The 'Con, the Rubicon Trail Foundation staff and attendees were able to access high-speed Internet and make cell phone calls from the Loon Lake spillway at the head of the Rubicon Trail, the site of this annual event. This allowed RTF staff to process credit cards online for the first time at the event, making it easier for attendees to purchase food, merchandise and raffle tickets, and ultimately raising the amount of funds realized by Cantina For The 'Con.

The owner of El Dorado Networks, Alan Thompson, was on hand to set-up the Internet and cell-phone services. "It was a real honor, and a challenge, to be invited by the RTF to provide communications services at Cantina For The 'Con," said Thompson. "I knew we could get high-speed Internet there because the Gen4 Internet system has equally powerful coverage anywhere in the Western Sierras, but cell phone service is a different matter," said Thompson. "The Loon Lake site is extremely remote, and cell signals anywhere within five miles of that area are practically non existent. Cantina For The 'Con is held in the bottom of the Loon Lake spillway, a 40'-deep channel carved out of solid, Tahoe granite, further shielding the site from any cell phone service. Working from an overlook above the spillway with a high-end Wilson cell phone booster and directional antenna, I was able to lock on to an extremely weak signal from an AT&T cell tower on Donner Summit hidden 22 miles away behind four ridges to the North. Cell phone service is normally line of sight, and ranges out to about 10 miles across open ground. I was surprised, and RTF staff and attendees could hardly believe it."

Rubicon Trail Foundation Director, Sean Russell, commented, This year's Cantina for the Con was a huge success and exceeded our expectations. The ability to make a cell phone call out for additional chips, cheese & jalapeños kept the nachos flowing Sunday afternoon. Ken Hower, also an RTF Director, added, "This was our 10th annual Cantina, but the first one to bring this technology to such a beautiful and remote location. We look forward to expanding our relationship with El Dorado Networks to bring more technology to our supporters."
